How a spreadsheet of bad jokes turned into a site with hundreds of hand-written puns, the four rules every page is written to, and the two people responsible.

How this happened

MrPuns began as a spreadsheet of puns one person kept sending to the same four friends. The friends asked for it to stop. It didn't. The spreadsheet became a website, the website grew eight topics and a generator, and somewhere along the way it picked up a few plain-English guides to the internet — because the same person who likes bad jokes also dislikes confusing explanations.

Why a pun site explains AI

Puns make words do two jobs at once. Language models are machines built to predict the next word. A site obsessed with the first was always going to end up explaining the second — plainly, accurately and without the hype. The Tech & AI section is edited by Theo, and it's where we publish guest posts from people who work with this technology every day.

The rules we work to

  • Typed by a human. No pun here was generated by a model. If it made one of us groan out loud, it made the list.
  • Counts are real. If a title says 74, there are 74 on the page. We don't round up.
  • Say what we checked. Tech & AI guides describe what we could verify, and say plainly when we couldn't.
  • Safe for your aunt. Everything works in a card, a classroom, and the family group chat.

Nia started MrPuns as a spreadsheet of jokes she kept sending to the same four friends. The spreadsheet got out of hand. She writes most of the pun collections, draws the cards, and maintains a strict policy that every pun on the site was typed by a human who thought it was funny at the time.

Tech & AI Editor

Theo edits the Tech & AI section and checks every piece that goes into it. His background is in fact-checking, which mostly means he's the person who asks "but how do we know that?" until everyone in the room is annoyed. He also writes the internet-literacy guides, and insists the award-show puns were research.
